Dorper Sheep
(Dorset Horned and Black Haired Persian)

Picture copyright of Marj & Ron Guenther, of Riverwood Farm. The Dorper breed was developed in South Africa. There are the Dorper (with black heads) and the White Dorper breeds. The breed was established in 1942. Their fleece naturally sheds, so they don't need any shearing. The fleece is also unusual, in that the hair only grows in certain areas, as you can tell from the picture. They are also quite resistant to disease and pests - they don't need chemical treatment for flystrike. Picture copyright of Marj & Ron Guenther, of Riverwood Farm.

They are a very fertile breed, with the ewes being good mothers. Her lambs grow very quickly.

Dorpers can survive on minimal amount of food and still thrive.
